Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what Refined ("Refined", "we", or "us") does with your information when you use the Refined mobile app (the "App") or visit refined.video (the "Site"). Refined is operated by Build With Tori LLC.

What we collect and use

Account information

Refined uses Sign in with Apple. Apple gives us a unique account identifier and, if you choose to share them, your name and email address. Apple's Hide My Email feature may provide a private relay address instead of your personal email. We use Supabase Auth to maintain your Refined account and authenticate server requests.

Video and photos stay on your device

Video you import or record, camera frames used for green screen, background photos you choose, thumbnails, waveforms, project files, previews, and exported video files are processed and stored on your device. Refined does not upload or store the video file. When you ask Refined to save a recording or export, it writes that file to your photo library after you grant permission.

Extracted audio

Refined extracts the audio track from your video and sends it through our Expo-hosted API to AssemblyAI for transcription. If you request audio enhancement, the full extracted audio is also sent to Cleanvoice. Our API passes audio through for processing and does not keep a stored copy. AssemblyAI and Cleanvoice process the audio under their service terms, retention settings, and data processing commitments.

Transcript text and edit history

To suggest cuts, Refined sends transcript text, words, and timestamps through our API to Anthropic. Anthropic returns edit suggestions such as which words to remove. The video file is not included in this request.

Refined stores transcript processing history in Supabase so we can operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the editing workflow. This history can include words and timestamps, prompts, model responses, suggested cuts, titles, processing status, timing, usage, cost estimates, and error details. We also send detailed processing traces to Braintrust for quality review and troubleshooting. Braintrust traces may include the transcript, prompts, model output, validated cuts, the kept transcript, and related processing details.

Creator profile and onboarding answers

We save the answers you give during the creator questionnaire, such as the type and number of videos you make and the time you spend editing. We use these answers to personalize your onboarding and to understand the creators who use Refined.

Usage analytics

We use PostHog to understand how Refined is used and to find failures. Analytics can include event names and timings, workflow status, processing durations and cost estimates, app version, device model, operating system, build channel, subscription state, and hashed values used to compare processing inputs and outputs without sending the raw text to product analytics. After sign-in, analytics are associated with your Refined account identifier and may include the name or email Apple shared with us.

Ad measurement

We advertise Refined on Meta platforms (Facebook and Instagram) and use the Meta SDK to measure whether those ads lead to installs and paying customers. The SDK reports that the App was installed and opened, and a small number of milestones: creating an account, finishing an export, starting a trial, and subscribing. Trial and subscription events are sent to Meta by RevenueCat on our behalf and include the plan, price, and currency of the purchase, but not your receipt or payment details. These reports include your device model, operating system, app version, time zone, language, IP address, and a Meta-generated anonymous identifier.

Your device advertising identifier (IDFA) is included only if you choose Allow when iOS asks whether Refined may track you. If you choose Ask App Not to Track, Meta still receives aggregate install reports through Apple's SKAdNetwork, which does not identify you or your device. The SDK never receives your video, audio, transcript, name, or email.

Website visitors

On the Site we use PostHog to count visits and see which pages and buttons lead people to the App Store, and the Meta pixel to measure whether our Facebook and Instagram ads bring visitors to the Site. Both record the pages you view, the Download buttons you click, your browser and device type, approximate location from your IP address, and the referrer or campaign that brought you here. They set cookies and similar identifiers in your browser so that repeat visits can be recognized. Meta may combine pixel data with your Meta account under its own privacy policy. The Site does not collect your name, email, or anything you type unless you send it to us through a form.

Support messages

If you send feedback inside Refined, we store your message, account identifier, contact information, app context, and submission status in Supabase. We may also send the message by email through Resend. We use this information to answer you and investigate what you reported.

Purchases and subscriptions

Subscriptions are sold and processed by Apple. We do not receive your card number, billing address, or Apple Account password. RevenueCat receives your Refined account identifier, purchase identifiers, product selection, entitlement, subscription status, and renewal information so the App and our server can verify access and maintain your processing balance.

Why we use this information

We use this information to provide the features you request, authenticate your account, verify purchases, maintain processing balances, prevent fraud and abuse, save your creator preferences, troubleshoot failures, answer support requests, understand product use, and improve Refined's reliability and editing quality.

Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we rely on performance of a contract to deliver Refined; our legitimate interests in security, reliability, support, and product improvement; your consent where we ask for device permissions; and legal obligations where required.

Why we are allowed to process your information

Where the law asks us to name a legal basis (for example in the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland), we rely on: performance of our contract with you, to provide the App and your subscription; our legitimate interests, to secure the service, fix failures, understand how Refined is used, respond to support requests, and measure our own advertising; your consent, for camera, microphone, photo, and tracking permissions, which you can withdraw at any time in iOS Settings; and legal obligations, such as tax and accounting records.

Who we share information with

We share information only as described in this Policy with service providers that help run Refined: Apple and Supabase for identity; Expo for API hosting; AssemblyAI for transcription; Cleanvoice for audio enhancement; Anthropic for edit suggestions; Supabase for account data, creator profiles, feedback, and processing history; Braintrust for processing traces and quality review; PostHog for analytics; RevenueCat for subscription and entitlement management; Meta for measuring our own advertising; and Resend for support email. We require providers to protect data consistently with their agreements with us and applicable law.

We may disclose information when required by law, to protect the security and rights of users or Refined, or as part of a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of the business. We will provide notice where the law requires it.

We do not sell personal information. The ad measurement described above sends install and milestone events to Meta, which some privacy laws treat as "sharing" for advertising purposes. You can opt out at any time by choosing Ask App Not to Track when iOS asks, or later under iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.

Retention and deletion

Local projects remain on your device until you delete them, delete your account through the App, or remove the App. Supabase account, creator profile, and owned processing records are kept while your account is active and are deleted when you use Refined's in-app account deletion. Feedback already sent may be retained without its link to your account when needed to resolve or document a support issue.

Braintrust processing traces, PostHog analytics, provider records, security logs, support email, and legally required business records follow the applicable service's retention controls and our operational or legal retention needs. These records may remain for a limited period after account deletion. If you ask us to, we will delete or de-identify the analytics and processing-trace records tied to your account identifier within 45 days of verifying your request, except for records we are required to keep for security, accounting, or legal reasons.

Deleting your Refined account does not cancel an Apple subscription. You can manage or cancel the subscription in your Apple Account subscription settings.

International processing

We and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where required, transfers rely on contractual protections or another lawful transfer mechanism.

Your rights and choices

You can revoke camera, microphone, and photo access at any time in iOS Settings, although related features will stop working. You can delete individual projects in Refined. You can delete your account from Account settings in the App. You can manage or cancel your Apple subscription through Apple's subscription settings. You can withdraw tracking permission for ad measurement under iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. On the Site, you can block or clear cookies in your browser settings, and you can limit how Meta uses pixel data from websites in your Meta account's ad and off-Meta activity settings.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or receive a copy of your personal information, and to complain to a data protection authority. Contact us at the address below to make a request. We may need to verify your identity before completing it.

Additional rights for United States residents

If you live in California or another state with a comprehensive privacy law, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect and why, to access, correct, or delete it, to receive a copy of it, to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. In the past twelve months we have collected the categories described in this Policy: identifiers, contact information, commercial information about subscriptions, audio and transcript content you choose to process, device and usage information, and support messages. We do not sell personal information. We do not knowingly collect precise location, biometric identifiers, or sensitive personal information.

To opt out of ad measurement (which some state laws treat as sharing for targeted advertising), choose Ask App Not to Track when iOS asks, or turn tracking off for Refined under iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. To exercise any other right, or to appeal a decision we make about a request, email us at the address below. You may use an authorized agent if you provide proof of authorization. We will verify your identity before acting on a request.

California residents may also request, once a year and free of charge, a list of any third parties to whom we disclosed personal information for their own direct marketing purposes. We do not make such disclosures.

Do Not Track. Refined does not currently respond to browser Do Not Track signals, because there is no accepted standard for them. The iOS tracking setting described above is the control that applies to the App.

Children

Refined is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it where required.

Security

We use HTTPS for data in transit, keep provider credentials on the server, verify signed-in users for server operations, and restrict database records by account. No system is completely secure, but we use safeguards appropriate to the information Refined handles.

Changes

If we change this Policy, we will update the date above and provide any additional notice required by law.
